The M40 was an American self-propelled gun from the Second World War. The first prototypes of the car were built at the turn of 1943-1944, and serial production started in 1944. The M40 was powered by an engine Continental R-975-C2 with 340 hp. It was armed with a single 155 mm M2 gun.

The M40 was created as a successor to the M12 King Kong self-propelled gun. The main difference was the use of the M4 Sherman tank chassis and the use of the new M2 cannon, which required a more powerful chassis. However, the same layout as in the M12 was retained, i.e. the driver and commander's seats were in the front of the car, the engine was placed in the middle of the fuselage, and the main armament was placed at the rear. The M40 symbolically took part in World War II, fighting only at the end of the conflict in Germany in 1945. Units equipped with the M40, on the other hand, took part in the Korean War (1950-1953). The M40 self-propelled gun was also exported to Great Britain where it served as Cardinal.
