Based on the chassis of the Panzer II tank, the Wespe - armed with a 105mm Howitzer and gun shield - was a deadly tool on the battlefields of The Eastern Front.

Alkett Sd.Kfz.124 Wespe

Designed to meet a German need for a self-propelled artillery vehicle, the Wespe was in service between 1943 and 1945. The Wespe (or "Wasp") was a light field howitzer 18 on a Panzer II chassis; the Panzer II turret was replaced with a gun shield and a 105mm leFH 18 howitzer. First entering the battlefield on the Eastern Front, Hitler was so impressed with the Wespe that he ordered production of all other Panzer II vehicles halted so that resources could be devoted to building the Wespe. Between 1943 and 1944, 682 Wespes were built, some of which were used as ammunition carriers.

Forces of Valor's 1:72 scale Wespe has the same quality construction and features generally seen in higher priced models. The top portion of the hull is constructed in diecast metal with the lower portion in plastic, which allows for crisp detailing such as that seen on the leaf spring suspension and road wheels. The elevating metal cannon and gun shield move side to side, and the opened top turret provides an unobstructed view of the cannon's breech system, dial controls and ocular sight system. Battlefield equipment such as hatches, shovel, jack and separately applied spare track are mounted on the hull.
